When the strong one gets tired.

Thoughts from the Floor, written by someone doing their best

Stumbling, surviving, still here

There’s a truth many of us carry quietly, tucked behind the daily tasks and the brave faces we put on for the world: sometimes the strong one gets tired.

Not just “I need a nap” tired.

Not just “I’ve had a long week” tired.

But the kind of tired that settles into your bones.

The kind that makes you sit on the floor for a moment longer than you meant to.

The kind that makes you wonder when you stopped being a person with needs of your own.

If you’re reading this and nodding, this piece is for you.

I’m not writing this to blame anyone.

I’m not writing this to call anyone out.

I’m writing this because I know what it feels like to carry more than you can say out loud — and I know I’m not the only one.

There are so many of us who love deeply, show up consistently, and hold things together quietly. We take care of the people around us because we want them to be okay. We handle the tasks no one else notices. We absorb the emotions no one else knows how to hold. We keep the house, the schedules, the appointments, the crises, the routines, the everything.

And somewhere along the way, we forget that we’re human too.

Caregiving — in any form — is heavy.

It’s beautiful, meaningful, and full of love.

But it’s also heavy.

Some of the people in our lives truly cannot do certain things on their own. Others could, but don’t. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, we become the default person who steps in first.

And when you’re the one who steps in first, people stop stepping in at all.

We take care of things even when we’re exhausted.

We handle tasks even when we’re overwhelmed.

We keep going even when we feel like collapsing.

We hold everything together even when we’re falling apart inside.

And the hardest part isn’t the work.

It’s the loneliness.

The loneliness of being the one who notices.

The one who remembers.

The one who anticipates.

The one who absorbs.

The one who keeps going because someone has to.

If you’ve ever felt invisible inside your own life, I want you to hear this clearly:

You are not alone.

You are not weak for feeling overwhelmed.

You are not selfish for wanting space.

You are not failing because you’re tired.

You are not wrong for needing help.

You are not broken because you can’t do it all.

You are human.

A messy, beautiful, complicated human — doing your best in circumstances that would flatten most people.

And you deserve care too.

You deserve rest.

You deserve support.

You deserve to be seen.

You deserve to have needs.

You deserve to be more than the strong one.

If no one has told you this lately, let me be the one to say it:

You are doing an incredible job in impossible circumstances.

You are allowed to be tired.

You are allowed to set things down.

You are allowed to take up space in your own life again.

This isn’t a cry for pity.

This is a reminder — to you, to me, to anyone reading — that even the strongest people need support.

And maybe, just maybe, these notes from the floor will help someone else feel a little less alone in their own invisible weight.

What’s one tiny thing you’ve been holding all by yourself that you can set down — even briefly — today? Not forever. Not perfectly. Just long enough to breathe.

If something in this piece landed in your chest, consider sending a small truth to someone you trust — even something as simple as: “Hey. Today felt like a lot.”

You don’t have to give the whole backstory. You don’t have to be polished or profound. You just get to be a human having a human day.

And if you don’t have a person you can reach for right now, let this space — this messy, unfinished, beautifully human masterpiece — remind you of something true:

Your story matters. Your feelings matter. You don’t have to move through the hard parts in silence.

Till we meet at the next resting point, whenever and wherever it finds us.

A messy human, doing their best— Robin Lynn
